The town is unique as it encompasses 5 seperate villages within its boundaries. These villages are North Dennis, West Dennis, South Dennis, Dennis Port and East Dennis. Each have their own zip code and their very own post office. Dennis was first settled in 1639 by John Crowell, Anthony Thatcher, and Thomas Howes. It was originally settled as part of Yarmouth and was referred to as the “East Precinct.” The Indians who preceded the English Settlers referred to the area as “Sesuit”, “Quivet” and “Nobscuessett.” The town officially separated and incorporated in 1793. It was named after the Town’s resident minister, Rev. Josiah Dennis. Survival in Dennis was not an easy task. There was not sufficient farmable land and therefore seafaring became the town’s major industry. Fishing, whaling, ship building and so much more became centered around the Shiverick Shipyard. The Town of Dennis spans the width of Cape Cod with Cape Cod Bay to the north and Nantucket Sound to the south. The town lies on the eastern banks of Bass River, which nearly divides Cape Cod in half. The level south side of town was formed by glacial outwash. Bass River and Swan Pond River were carved in the outwash plain by large flows of water. Today Dennis is much more well known for its miles and miles of beautiful coastline. It is also known for its stately colonial mansions along the Cape Cod Bay Coastline. The Mid Cape Town of Dennis has something to offer everyone today. Whether it is the beautiful beaches, the recreation and boating from Sesuit Harbor or the uniqueness of each of the 5 villages there is something for everyone. Creating A Responsible Environment for the Cape & Islands
Creating A Responsible Environment for the Cape & Islands (CARE) What is it? CARE for the Cape & Islands™ was founded in 2012 as the Cape and Islands’ first “travelers’ philanthropy initiative”. CARE’s mission is to encourage, support, and create opportunities for visitors to donate their “time, talent, and treasure” to help preserve and protect the very things they travel here to see and enjoy: exquisite natural beauty, plant and wildlife habitats, Cape & Islands culture and history. Why Cape Cod and the Islands? Cape Cod and the Islands’ scenic beauty and pristine coastline are enjoyed and appreciated by millions of visitors each year, presenting a need to protect its unique qualities. This program will enable us to help sustain the region’s fragile ecosystem, the culture and the heritage that draw visitors and residents to vacation, work and live. Ultimately, CARE for the Cape & Islands™ is seeking to tap into the travelers’ growing interest in and support of eco-tourism and green-travel as well as their philanthropic inclinations to help us to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Cape & Islands as a national treasure and travel destination. How does it work? CARE for the Cape & Islands educates and facilitates relationships among travelers, businesses, local organizations, environmental initiatives, and residents. Working closely with those involved in the travel industry, CARE is able to create opportunities for travelers to contribute to local efforts to promote long-term environmental conservation and cultural heritage preservation.
