- Top off your tank before leaving for the winter
- Post a reminder for your next fuel delivery to avoid getting too low
- Call when the tank reading is ½ or below for a delivery. Most fuel and propane companies have a 100 gallon minimum delivery.
- Call for a delivery 24 – 48 hours before forecasted snow, especially if your road or driveway is difficult to access in the snow.
- Check your thermostats (most fuel companies recommend that you set it at 58 – 60 if the home is unoccupied)
- Ensure that all of your windows and doors are properly secured in order to avoid unnecessary heat loss.
- Remember to supply your caretaker with new keys that have been tested prior to leaving.
- Provide your fuel /propane company with updated contact numbers as well as caretaker information.
- The property should be checked after any power outages to ensure the heat came back on.
- If the home is not usually occupied in the winter, and there will be people staying there, please let your fuel company know as it will drastically change the fuel usage.
- Leave a checklist on how to properly close up your home for anyone that does stay there.
- Arrange to have your driveway and/or road cleared in the event of snow as the fuel trucks need safe access to the tanks.
- Be sure to call in advance to schedule your annual burner service.
